The “Portas do Mar” [Gateway to the Sea] complex was inaugurated on 5th July, 2008, to modernise Ponta Delgada’s seafront, creating a comfortable leisure area and key attraction on São Miguel Island.

The Portas do Mar has a port for cruise ships and inter-island boats, with a 120 metre long wharf for inter-island ferries and a 250 metre long wharf for large cruise ships.

It also has a marina for 440 boats, with the respective support structures (bathrooms, reception, warehouses, etc.), a swimming pool and respective installations, an underground car park with space for 200 vehicles, a large amphitheatre, a 4.000 square metre pavilion for exhibitions and cultural events, and gardens bordering the seafront promenade. This new undertaking is attached to the old Ponta Delgada marina and respective services.

The Portas do Mar has a shopping gallery, with a wide range of shops and services, such as different types of restaurant, bars and pubs, a bank, Azorean handcrafts, a gift shop, travel agency, car rental, perfume store, beauty centre, drugstore, sports gear boutique, and whale-watching tours and other activities.
